The Faculty Senate Executive Committee has unanimously approved an important amendment to our Academic Integrity Policy. This update incorporates guidelines addressing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in student academic work, ensuring that our standards for academic honesty evolve alongside technological advancements. We wanted to get this added before the start of the semester to facilitate faculty discussions with students about academic integrity.

In addition to the several examples of academic dishonestly previously listed in the policy, we have added the following:

Academic dishonesty is an act in which a student "uses generative AI tools, such as chatbots, image generators, or code generators, to complete assignments, exams, or any other academic work without explicit permission from the instructor. This includes entering assignment or exam questions into AI tools to generate answers, submitting AI-generated content as original work, and failing to disclose the use of AI in creating submissions when required."

This amendment is an important step in maintaining the integrity of our academic programs. Please review and update your syllabi with your AI policies as we approach the new semester. We encourage you to visit the "Exploring AI" website for more information, including proposed syllabus language for faculty.
