Microsoft 365 Account Information

How do I mark something as junk or not junk?

Windows:

  1. In Outlook, select the email that you want to report as Junk or Phishing. 
  2. In the top Ribbon, you should have a Junk drop down selection. 
  3. Choose Report as Junk or Report as Phishing
  4. An email will automatically be sent to  improve the the spam filters going forward.
Mac:
  1. In Outlook, select the email that you want to move out of your Junk folder
  2. Right click on the email, and in the drop down menu, hover over “Report Junk”
  3. In the next menu, you will have the option to select Not Junk, Block, or Phishing
  4. This will move that email into your inbox folder
Online:
  1. Click on the email that you would like to Mark as Junk or Phishing
  2. On the right hand side, click the down button with 3 dots.
  3. One of the options should be Mark as Junk or Mark as phishing.
  4. The email will automatically be sent to Microsoft to improve the the spam filters going forward

What is my official email address?

Your official UMass Lowell email address is Firstname_Lastname@uml.edu. If Firstname_Lastname@uml.edu is already taken, a number will be added to your account name (i.e. Firstname_Lastname1@uml.edu). Your legal first name and last name as documented in the UMass Lowell Human Resources office is used. Your login account name in Outlook Web App (OWA) and any email client is your FULL email address (i.e., John_Smith@uml.edu).

How do I read my email from the Web?

Open your browser and go to https://outlook.office.com. This link provides access to your messages, calendars, contacts, tasks, etc. as well as Global Access Lists from anywhere on the Internet.

What is my initial password?

Due to security restrictions, your initial password is assigned to you by the IT Service Desk at 978-934-HELP (4-4357). Be prepared to provide personal information to verify your identity.

Are there any special requirements for my email password?

  1. For employees:
    Minimum password length is 16 characters (effective Aug. 24, 2020)
  2. For students:
    Minimum password length is 16 characters (effective Dec. 2, 2020)
  3. Passwords must include at least three out of four of the following:
    o Contain at least one upper-case character
    o Contain at least one lower-case character
    o Contain at least one special character (i.e., @!#$%&*)
    o Contain at least 1 numeric character
  4. Valid special characters are: ` ~ ! @ # $ % ^ & * ( ) _ + - = { } | [ ] \ : " ; ' < > ? , . /
  5. Passwords may include a space
  6. Passwords cannot contain all or part of your name
  7. Passwords will be locked out for five minutes after 10 consecutive invalid login attempts
  8. Passwords cannot be re-used
  9. Providing all password requirements have been met, your password will not expire.

To access most online systems on the UMass Lowell campus, you must have a valid UMass Lowell email account. 

This account provides you access to applications that use Single Sign On (SSO) credentials, such as your UMass Lowell email account, SiS Self-Service, the Wireless Network, HR Direct, myAlert, MyParking, VPN, the Online Housing Portal and the Echo360 Lecture Capture System.

How can I find an email in my inbox?

Your Microsoft 365 account has a search function at the top of the window. You can use this search feature to search your inbox or any of your other folders in outlook. You can also use the search filters to find emails that are from a specific person, have attachments, and many other options. You can also use this search bar as a help option, where you can type in the feature that you are looking for like signatures, accessibility, and delegates.
