2017 Sounds of Portugal
A NIGHT OF FADO WITH JOANA AMENDOEIRA AND DUARTE
The UMass Lowell Saab Center for Portuguese Studies, in partnership with Portuguese / American Cultural Exchange (PACE), hosted “Sounds of Portugal: A Concert by Joana Amendoeira and Duarte”, at the Durgin Concert Hall, on Friday November 3, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
Joana Amendoeira is considered one of the most important singers of the “new generation” of Fado. Born in Santarém (Ribatejo), Portugal, Amendoeira won first prize at Grande Noite do Fado do Porto when she was 12 years old. She has gone on to release nine albums and garner many prizes—including “Best Fado Album 2008” from the Foundation Amalia Rodrigues—and has toured all over the world. Her latest album, “Muito Depois” (Long After), explores the deepest traditions of Fado—a music form recently recognized by UNESCO for its cultural uniqueness—through contemporary lyrics that speak to the rhythms of love and loss. This will be her first official U.S. visit.
