Claire Chamberlain, M.Ed., C.A.G.S. was named Associate Professor Emerita after serving as faculty at the University of Massachusetts Lowell for 37 years. Prof. Chamberlain was previously faculty in the Department of Physical Education from 1971-1991, serving as Chair from 1984-1991. During her tenure, she taught 21 different courses within the undergraduate Physical Education program and created the minor in Coaching.

In 1991, Chamberlain joined the Department of Physical Therapy (now Physical Therapy and Kinesiology), serving as the first Academic Coordinator Clinical Education (ACCE) for the undergraduate BS in Exercise Physiology (now Exercise Science) program until her retirement in 2008. During her tenure, she taught the Introduction to Exercise Physiology and Exercise Prescription courses, earning several teaching and advising awards for her instructional abilities, and formed the clinical experiences for the program.

She was also active within the Athletics Department, notably co-founding women’s sports (softball, volleyball, basketball, tennis, field hockey), head coaching the women’s tennis (1973-1983) and basketball (1972-1975) teams, and serving as the Title IX Coordinator and as a member of the UMass Lowell Athletics Hall of Fame Committee. Outside of UMass Lowell, Chamberlain helped found the Massachusetts Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (MAIAW), and was active within the Eastern Association for Physical Education of College Women (EAPECW), serving as a past-president for both organizations. She was also the first-ever commissioner of ethics and eligibility for the MAIAW, helping write the constitution, bylaws and championship handbooks.

During her career, Chamberlain earned several notable awards and honors, including being inducted into the New Agenda–Northeast Women’s Hall of Fame in 1993 and the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010, and received the UMass Lowell Francis Cabot Lowell Award in 2009, the UMass Lowell Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award in 1997, and the MAIAW Honor Award in 1984.
