Graduate Scholarship for Emerging Leaders – Africa
International students who meet the qualifications for admittance into a Master’s degree program will be awarded up to $20,000 in Graduate Scholarship funding.
Scholarship funds of $5,000 will be awarded over four consecutive semesters to students who maintain good academic standing in their programs. The award is available for up to five semesters (up to $25,000 total) to students pursuing a Master of Public Health degree.
Students must apply by one of the priority deadlines (see below) for either the Fall 2025 start term, or Spring 2026, and pursue studies full-time on campus. These scholarships were created to help international students advance their knowledge and careers, and contribute to promoting science, technology, leadership and management at UMass Lowell.
Scholarship Requirements
Academic Criteria: To receive the scholarship, you must meet the academic standards required for acceptance into your program of interest. No separate application is required.
Program of Study: You must be admitted into a Master’s degree program.
Location: You must pursue your degree full-time by taking classes on campus at UMass Lowell or at minimum, two on-campus and one online course each semester.
Tuition Residency: Applicants must be classified as international tuition residency per university and state guidelines. You must successfully pursue your degree program in F-1 student status sponsored by UMass Lowell. You will be required to take a full-time course load on campus or, at minimum, two on-campus and one online course each semester, and maintain your valid F-1 status.
Demonstrated Interest and Commitment: Preference for applicants who have a demonstrated interest and commitment to enhancing science, healthcare, technology, management and leadership in Africa. Applicants are encouraged to reflect on these points in their Statement of Purpose which is part of the graduate application requirements.
Priority Application Deadlines: Applicants who plan to start their program in the Fall are strongly encouraged to apply by February 15 of that year. Applicants who complete their application prior to February 15 and receive admission in their master’s program will be awarded a Graduate Scholarship for Emerging Leaders – Africa.
Applicants applying after February 15 priority deadline will also be considered if there are scholarships still available to be awarded. The deadlines for the Spring 2026 semester will be announced in February.
Enrollment Confirmation: Admitted students who are awarded a scholarship must submit their enrollment deposit within 21 days. If the deposit has not been submitted, the scholarship may be revoked.
Awarding Guidelines: Students who receive other tuition based awards, such as National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), National Science Foundation (NSF), Fulbright Scholarships, Research or Teaching Assistant appointments, or other employee tuition benefits may only apply one of these award towards their tuition; in these circumstances, UMass Lowell will always apply the award that is most advantageous to the student.
