Mystery Egg Came from a Different Bird
05/27/2016
Avid falcon watcher Ester Joson reported spotting a second egg inside the nest box at around 5:15 p.m. on Friday, May 27. She saw Merri via webcam bring in a fairly large bird to the nest and started feeding it to the chicks. After Merri was done, she took off with the carcass, leaving a fresh egg behind. The egg, which is lighter and smaller than the falcon egg, must have come from the captured prey.
Tom French of the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife identified the egg as a pigeon egg. He says this is the first time he had seen it happen. The egg disappeared from the nest by Sunday.
