The Early Music Ensemble performs music from a wide variety of styles from before the year 1750. The ensemble is open to all students, faculty, staff and Greater Lowell community members without audition. Each semester the ensemble chooses period works tailored to the instrumentation and voicing of the current enrollment. Members of the ensemble perform in both large works with the full ensemble as well as smaller projects in chamber groups. The Early Music Ensemble performs both secular and sacred works from throughout the time period, and there are often opportunities for members to pursue extended study in genres or styles that they are particularly interested in.
Recent exciting performances have included passages from Monteverdi's Orfeo, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli, and Schütz' Psalmen Davids. Smaller projects in recent semesters have included medieval chant, early chansons and madrigals, songs for lute and voice, works for recorder ensemble, and Baroque trio sonatas. If you have an interest in early music, bring your ideas to this ensemble and we'll make them happen!
The Early Music Ensemble performs each semester in the Early Music Concert Series, which was founded by retired music faculty member Paula Telesco as an interdisciplinary project between the Department of Music and the Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program.
