Biosketch
Professor Russell Karl is a native of New Bedford, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of Suffolk Law School (1970), a member of the Massachusetts’ Bar Association (admitted in November, 1970), and was admitted and qualified to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States in May 1984. Professor Karl also holds a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Suffolk University.
Professor Karl joined the faculty of Lowell Technological Institute, one of the predecessors of the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, in September 1970. He started by teaching Economics then various courses in Accounting and Business Law thereafter. With the creation of the Legal Studies Program in 1991, he began teaching courses in other areas of law, mainly Criminal Law and Real Estate Law. In 1993, he developed and began teaching a course in Family Law. In addition to teaching Family Law in the traditional classroom, Professor Karl began offering the class on-line for the Division of Continuing Education in 2007.
Professor Karl also taught as an Adjunct Professor at Middlesex Community College and Boston University Metropolitan College. Professor Karl actively practiced law in the Merrimack Valley for approximately 35 years. During that period he practiced before the District, Family and Superior Courts in the Northeast Region of Massachusetts, and on a few occasions the Massachusetts Court of Appeals, primarily representing individual and business clients in real estate, family law, contracts and other business related matters. He also accepted criminal defense assignments from the Lawrence District Court as a bar advocate/public defender for 15 years (1975-1990).
Professor Karl is married, has three adult children, six grandchildren and resides in North Andover, Massachusetts. He enjoys bicycling, skiing, hiking, traveling and visiting with his grandchildren.
