Biosketch
Alan joined UMass Lowell in 1977 as the first member of the Criminal Justice Department and served as Graduate Coordinator, Special Assistant to the Graduate Dean and on the Institutional Review Board for human subject research. Alan also was a member of the Disaster Preparedness Task Force and headed the section on the Graduate School for the 2003 NEASC review. He served as the first Ombudsman at the University of Massachusetts Lowell and is Professor Emeritus of Criminal Justice and Criminology. He is the Founding Editor of the Journal of the International Ombudsman Association. He serves as an evaluator for the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. Alan earned master’s degrees in both social psychology and sociology and a doctorate in sociology from UMass Amherst. Doctoral areas of specialization were Social Psychology and Collective Behavior/Disasters. He also completed a National Institute of Health Postdoctoral Program in Family Violence. He previously held a Fulbright Professorship in the Netherlands and is the author of numerous articles and three books on crime and violence in the family and public places. Alan also is a former journal editor of Library and Archival Security. He is a certified mediator and currently holds a five year appointment on the Fulbright Senior Specialists Roster. Alan now works as a Consulting Ombudsman and teaches online graduate classes at UMass Lowell. Alan recently completed a Fulbright Specialists project in Peace and Conflict Studies at Ashesi University in Ghana. At Ashesi he facilitated a revision of faculty and student policies and drafted new Sexual Harassment and Research Ethics guidelines.
