Planning works closely with various university departments to model and forecast student housing demand and identify strategies and projects to address the anticipated demand.

UMass Lowell Fox Hall. At 18 stories tall, Fox Hall is the tallest building in Lowell. It's also home to a pair of endangered peregrine falcons - one of only 14 pairs in the state! The falcons can even be watched live every year as they next and hatch chicks.

Student housing demand is closely related to student enrollment levels, which in turn is guided by the UMass Lowell 2020 Strategic Plan. Through tracking student enrollment and collaborating with representatives from various university departments, Planning translate enrollment projects into models and forecasts of campus housing demand, and identify strategies and projects to address the anticipated demand.

Planning for Student Housing

Student housing planning is a key component of the university’s successful ongoing transition from a commuter school to a residential campus (as designated by the Carnegie Foundation) and supports the 2020 Plan Strategic Priority of Enhancing the Student Experience as a “university of choice” with a “vibrant campus and community experience.”

Housing modeling is done in partnership with and using data from the Provost’s Office, Residence Life, Dean of Students Office, Office of Institutional Research, and University Space Committee, among others.

The UMass Lowell campus currently maintains an inventory of approximately 5,000 on-campus beds. This is likely to satisfy projected demand for the next several years.
