ADMINISTRATIVE ANNOUNCEMENT NO. 11

The primary concern in a fire is the prevention of personal injury. Proper response by individuals will assure the safety of others and minimize damage caused by fire and smoke. The following actions should be utilized when a fire is discovered or the fire alarm horn sounds.

Visible Smoke or Fire:

  1. Activate the fire alarm pull station and evacuate the building.
  2. Do not use the elevators. Exit through a stairway that leads directly outside. Be familiar with at least two means of exit from your area.
  3. Call the University Police at x2911 from a "safe" phone near an exit. Provide information.

A Portable Fire Extinguisher Should Only Be Used When:

  1. The fire is "small" and will not affect your personal safety.
  2. You have been trained to use a fire extinguisher.
  3. The proper type extinguisher is available.
  4. The fire alarm has already been activated.

Smell of Smoke or Odors, but No Visible Fire:

  1. Call the University Police Department at x2911.
    • Describe the situation.
    • Give location.
    • Meet and identify yourself when personnel respond.
  2. Notify your supervisor of the situation and actions that have been taken.
  3. Be alert and suspicious of the area until response personnel arrive.

Fire Alarm Sounds From an Unknown Area:

  1. Evacuate the building.
  2. Do not use elevators. Exit through a stairway hat leads directly outside.

Note:

  1. Be aware of handicapped individuals in your area. Upon an alarm of fire, a handicapped person should be assisted into a stairway that leads directly to the outdoors. The fire department should be made aware of the location of a handicapped person so proper evacuation can be accomplished.
  2. The University Environmental and Emergency Management Department and/or University Police Department will advise when you may re-enter the building. Please stay in an area (outside the building) that will not interfere with fire response personnel.

For further information or clarification of these procedures please contact the University Environmental and Emergency Management office at x2618.
