2022 Sutherland Innovative Technology Solution

After a close call in a hospital's Emergency Department waiting care room, Tendren noticed that there was a need for a more efficient system utilized in waiting rooms. Oftentimes, people who need care wait for hours unmonitored in hospital waiting rooms without their vitals being checked. As a result of the current system, there is no way to determine how dire it is to be seen by a medical professional. Team Tendren, made up of University of Massachusetts Lowell students Ethan Block, Amie Russell, and Victoria Williams, biomedical engineering juniors have created a solution to this major problem.

Tendren is a wristband that hospitals would purchase and give to patients in the waiting room. This band would contain a wireless pulse oximeter to check the patient's vitals while they are in the waiting room. This will allow nurses the ability to examine the patients' health conditions and ensure they get proper care. Tendren was awarded the Sutherland Innovative Technology Solution (Sponsored by Andrew Sutherland ’94, Manning School of Business), a $4,000 prize. The team will use this funding to cover further their prototyping, specifically covering manufacturing fees, purchasing PCB boards, and software licenses.
