Team EV Guardian is made up of Civil Engineering senior Amanda Mello and Mechanical Engineering junior Abdullah Jasim. Team EV Guardian is currently working to create a product that enhances safety in EV vehicles and prevents EV fires from starting. Battery fires can last from hours to weeks and there is no way to know when one of these fires is completely put out. The team won the Sutherland Innovative Technology Solution Award (Sponsored by Andrew Sutherland ‘94, Manning School of Business) and $4,000 worth of funding at the 2024 DifferenceMaker $50,000 Idea Challenge.

During their pitch, Team EV Guardian explained how these fires can start followed by their solution to prevent EV fires. The solution they are creating is an eco-friendly and sustainable gel that would already be integrated into the electric vehicle’s battery pack when it is sold. This gel is specifically designed to cool the battery and smother the fire. When the device senses a fire, it will be deployed, extinguishing the fire within minutes. With the funding they received from the Idea Challenge, they plan to refine their gel solution, design a delivery system for the battery pack, and do multiple tests with full-size battery packs to attract future investors.
