Cassidy DeMalia’s introduction to the world of education was not a traditional one, but it led to her falling in love with the academic world. A native of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, she graduated from Seton Home Study School as one of 13 children. At UMass Lowell, after a semester of pursuing a degree in education, DeMalia switched her major, joining the university’s School of Criminology & Justice Studies, where she discovered her deep-rooted passion for the law.
During her time at UMass Lowell, DeMalia has actively contributed to the community. She founded and served as president of the Legal Studies Society, which established a network for aspiring legal scholars. She participated in various athletic clubs, including the field hockey, lacrosse and ice skating teams. DeMalia also enriched her studies by spending a semester abroad in London, visiting over 10 countries to study human rights in a global context and gain a international perspective on academics.
DeMalia is earning a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice with a double minor in legal studies and English and a concentration in crime and mental illness. She plans to attend law school in fall 2025, and hopes to eventually return to academia as a law educator for future aspiring legal minds.
In appreciation of DeMalia speaking at Commencement, Chancellor Julie Chen will donate $500 in her honor to the UMass Lowell club field hockey team.
