Department of Mathematics and Statistics
Mission Statement
The mission of the University of Massachusetts Lowell Department of Mathematics and Statistics is to provide quality instruction in mathematics to students at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to engage in original mathematics research. The two priorities of the department, quality instruction and original research, contribute to the campus mission of providing excellent, affordable educational programs and developing sustainable technologies and communities through teaching and research.
Overview/Description
The department serves virtually every student and every academic department at the university by means of its extensive course offerings. The level of instruction ranges from the training of professional mathematicians in upper level graduate mathematics courses to the instruction of students in nontechnical majors in order to reach competency levels established by the university. Between these two extreme levels lie the education of future mathematics teachers, scientists and engineers. The department strives to give students at all levels of instruction an awareness of the universality of mathematics and to give them the tools necessary to use mathematics at a level that is appropriate for each individual.
