Department of Biological Sciences

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Biological Sciences is to pursue excellence in education and research in the biological sciences with creative, interdisciplinary approaches to foster the creation of new knowledge about life in all its diversity. The two pillars of our mission, quality instruction and original research, work together to provide students with the foundation to succeed in the biotechnology and environmental industries, in post-graduate educational programs, and prepares students for admission to professional schools such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy.

Overview/Description

The Department of Biological Sciences offers programs of study in general biology, biotechnology, ecology, evolution and organismal biology, and bioinformatics. These programs ensure a strong foundation in supporting science and mathematics and provide the essential background needed for a career in modern biology. A variety of upper-level electives are available, and the curriculum is sufficiently flexible so that students may tailor it to meet their specific career goals and entrance requirements of professional schools and postgraduate programs. Although it is not required, students are encouraged to conduct original research as a capstone to their undergraduate experience. Students are able to obtain credit toward graduation for research, but more importantly, many research projects lead to student-authored publications in professional journals and presentations at scientific meetings.
