Multiple Areas of Undergraduate Study
UMass Lowell defines an area of study at the undergraduate level as a degree, major, concentration/option within a major, minor, and certificate. Limits on the number of areas of study are designed to promote degree completion. A student may claim multiple areas of study with permission from the appropriate department personnel and with the following restrictions:
- A student may not be enrolled simultaneously in more than 2 degrees, 2 majors or 2 concentrations/options within a major. Departments may place further restrictions on multiple concentrations.
- A student may not be enrolled simultaneously in more than 3 separate areas of study at the undergraduate level (e.g., at maximum, a student may simultaneously pursue two degrees and a minor, one major and two minors, two concentrations within a degree or major [where required or allowed] and a minor).
- A student with 30 or fewer credits remaining in their major degree program may not add an additional major, dual degree or minor that would extend their undergraduate career.
Students requesting an exception to this policy must submit an Academic Petition. Exceptions will be granted only with the approval of the degree major faculty advisor, department chairperson, and college academic dean.
