Music Admissions Requirements

Admissions Requirements

Admission to all programs in the Department of Music is by entrance audition only. All prospective freshmen and undergraduate transfer students must pass the entrance audition to be admitted into Music, in addition to all university admissions requirements. See the Department of Music's How to Apply webpage for dates and relevant information.

Prospective Composition for New Media students must also submit a portfolio:

  • Portfolio of original compositions (audio and/or video excerpts of 3 pieces, each between 1 and 2 minutes in length). Supporting materials such as scores, artwork, notes or pictures may also be submitted.
  • The portfolio materials can be uploaded using the UMass Lowell Online Portfolio Submission form.

A minimum cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 is required for intercollegiate transfer and for transfer from another institution. Additional requirements for admission to specific majors also apply.

Students who have been dismissed from the Department of Music may apply for readmission after one academic year. At that time a minimum grade point average of 3.000 over two semesters of full-time study at another institution or in another major at UMass Lowell is required to demonstrate adequate academic skills have been developed. Should the student’s previous performance also contain difficulties in applied performance studies, sufficient musical achievement must also be demonstrated by a re-audition.
