Description
Experiments are conducted to complement and expand on the principles covered in the Physiological Chemistry I lecture. The course provides a foundation in experimental chemistry emphasizing health-focused applications for students interested or majoring in one of the health professions, delivering important practical knowledge and training and computational and critical thinking skills needed for success in upper-level health science courses and as professionals in the field. Laboratory exercises will provide hands-on training in: laboratory safety and handling of equipment and instruments; generation and interpretation of experimental data; energy exchanges in physical and chemical changes; units of concentration and preparation of solutions; identification and characterization of simple ions having important physiological functions; chromatographic methods of analysis; liquid-liqiuid extraction; and structural analysis of organic compounds through molecular modeling.
