Description

This advanced video production course will explore independent documentary filmmaking through both the study and hands-on production of the form. The course will expose students to a wide array of documentary styles, gibing a brief history of the genre and an overview of its evolution. Through the study of films of various lengths and genres, students will develop their vision for and directorial approach to documentary filmmaking. Over the semester, students will work to produce a short-form film, learning best practices and key roles and responsibilities on a documentary crew and team. Emphasis will be on story telling and structure of the documentary, as well as on the intentional use of camera, sound, and editing to make meaning. Students will gain in-depth practice with on-location shooting, formal interviews, véréte filming, and will explore the specific dilemmas and decisions faced by documentary filmmakers in the field. The course will also explore the ethics of documentary filmmaking and current hot topics and debates in the field. Likewise, students will learn where and how to seek competitive documentary funding, and at the same time will develop the skills to make a professional-level documentary with little to no budget. They will leave the course with an understanding of options and processes for distributing and independently produced documentary, and will knowledge of how to maximize a documentary film's reach and impact.

DGMD.1100 Introduction to Digital Media Production.
