The course introduces students to the critical topics at the intersection of urban design and environmental justice. It will first explore how the allied professions of urban planning, architecture and landscape architecture have contributed to the history of environmental justice globally, nationally, and locally; this will include examining the political, psychological, and ecological forces that shape urban public spaces. It will then focus of the critical role of community engagement in planning and design processes and how urban design can serve as a form of activism and a catalyst for positive change.
