MECH.2960 Materials Science for Engineers (Formerly 22.296)

Id: 003810 Credits Min: 3 Credits Max: 3

Description

Students will study engineering materials, focusing on their properties, processing techniques, and selection in design for modern application. Structure-property-processing relationships and their impact on engineering performance are discussed. Primary material families are discussed, including metals, polymers, ceramics, and hybrids. Experimental and computational characterization, and data analysis methods are covered. Topics include stress, strain, strength, stiffness, thermal expansion, hardness, tensile and bending tests, strain gages, corrosion, microstructure, and sustainability metrics.

Prerequisites

Pre-Req: CHEM 1210 Chemistry I; and Mechanical Engineering or Industrial Engineering majors only.
