Description

This course examines grammar and style from practical and cultural perspectives, hones skills in editing pieces of real writing, and introduces professional pathways in editorial work. In this class, students will review key grammar, punctuation, and usage conventions (and see how rules can change over time and in different rhetorical situations); practice copyediting techniques; explore the differences between style guides (such as MLA, Chicago, AP, etc.); examine the connection between an author's editing choices and their style; consider the evolution and cultural context of grammar (including gender, race, and class); and discuss the ways grammar might change further in the digital age.
