Description
What makes us human? This course is designed to examine (and celebrate!) human biological and cultural diversity from the perspective of evolutionary and life history theory. Genetic and phenotypic variation in growth, immune function, maturation, reproductive function, and senescence are reviewed in reference to their potential adaptive significance. We will frame our discussion in the context of human evolutionary history from human origins in Africa to major migrations populating the planet and subsequent colonial interactions. The impact of shared human evolution as well as unique population histories on the evolution of modern socioeconomic and cultural diversity and their impacts on human health will also be discussed.
