The Department of World Languages and Cultures and Saab Center for Portuguese Studies invite you to the final viewing in our Spring 2025 Documentary Series, "¿De qué casa eres?" / "Where do you call home?"
“Where do you call home?” was the question repeatedly asked by the nearly 3,000 Spanish children exiled in the Soviet Union due to the Spanish Civil War. This is the story of one of those children, Angelita Perez, who lived from ages 4 to 24 in boarding schools in Russia until finishing her medical studies in Moscow. It is a story of overcoming, struggle, strength, resistance and courage, where there is talk of war, but above all of love, joy, families, homes, lands, roots, seas, belonging and identity, in an interplay between the past and the present that crosses world history with personal history.
The film is also a look at the relationship between mother and daughter. My mother and I, my mother's reality and my imagination. The songs we sing together are a bridge between us: my mother is land and I am sea. My childhood memories and my work built from them. My mother is my model of a strong, independent and determined woman, who inspires in me emotions and images, in an immense affection that I feel and want to share. Reviewing Angelita's epic story allows me to take part in her great adventure and declare my love for her.
