UMass Lowell’s two New England Youth Wind Ensembles pair our college student music mentors and teaching artists with talented younger musicians in an Honor’s Band environment. This year’s concert introduces respected traditional wind band compositions, understanding foundations in our genre through performance. Our Junior Winds begin with Sheldon’s Blaze of Glory, perform the beautiful and singable Chorale from Holst’s Jupiter. A multi-movement piece, British Isles Suite by Larry Daehn, features folksongs of each country. These middle works connect young participants to the history of wind band literature. Our Junior group finishes with Ed Huckeby’s multimeter work, Antecedium. Senior Winds meet tradition through Leeman’s Marches des Parachutistes Belges, and Grundman’s multi-movement Scottish Hebrides Suite. Our contemporary pieces feature the lyrical movie-balladesque Afterlife by Rossano Galante and the celebratory Rivers of Babylon by Ed Huckeby. The concert is 90 minutes, free and open to the public.
