The UMass Lowell Concert Band, Conducted by Debra-Nicole Huber, brings together students from all colleges at UML. The ensemble performs a wide array of contemporary and traditional works for Concert Band. “Connections” is the Spring Concert theme. Neoclassical film and tv composer Alfred Reed frequently conducted the Tokyo Kosei Wind Ensemble, and with them recorded Symphonic Prelude. Jan Van Der Roost honors Belgium's history as the first county in Europe to have a national rail system, the second to build locomotives, with his composition Arsenal, recorded by the same ensemble. Flying Away features Reed’s protégé, composer Yukiko Nishimura, whose contemporary wind-band works are celebrated for their vibrant artistry. Robert Sheldon describes Longford Legend as a collection of Irish street ballads, written in tribute to the folksong works of Vaughan-Williams, introduced in the fall. Two contemporary composers take us on exciting musical journeys, as Rossano Galante’s Rise of the Unicorn brings a fanciful chase, with warmth, gravitas and celebration, to life, while Steven Reineke’s Into the Raging River has us plunging headlong into the joy of the rapids on a sparkling summer day, a conclusion to the concert, and our semester.
