Mathematical Sciences
Mission
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics has two principal missions. The first is to provide students with a solid foundation in the basics of mathematics and to acquaint them with important concepts underlying more advanced topics. As a Bachelor’s degree in Arts, students will also be required to complete a significant number of courses in the Arts and Humanities in order to gain knowledge in a broad range of disciplines. This curriculum prepares students for immediate employment in business and industry, and also provides a valuable background for subsequent graduate study in mathematics, in related disciplines, and in education. The second is to deliver the mathematical content required by many other majors throughout the university. This is done by offering courses specifically tailored to the departments in question, usually in consultation with faculty in those departments.
