  • Name: Scarlet Ramos
  • College: Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences.
  • Major: Public Health with a health sciences concentration.
  • Hometown: New York City
  • Favorite hobbies: Reading, working out, and listening to music.
  • What is your favorite thing about UMass Lowell (UML)? My favorite thing about UMass Lowell is the community among the students and the professors that create a supportive environment for their students, especially first-generation ones.
  • What are your future goals? My future goals are to expand my passion for science, delve into the patterns and causes of diseases, and develop innovative strategies for prevention and control. As a professional, I would like to climb the ladder as high as I can.
  • What has having been involved with the RHSA meant to you? RHSA and my mentors have been a rock for me during all the time I have been part of the program. They guided me and always reminded me that I could succeed when I felt like everything fit me too big.
  • Looking back, what advice would you give to yourself in your first year of college? Looking back the advice I would give myself would be to always remember that beginnings are always hard, but your presence and situations are not a mistake because what is meant for you will find you no matter what.
  • What advice would you give fellow students? The advice I would give it would be to always remember that you earned your place at UML, and that there is nothing evil about looking at yourself with kindness in times of distress and to hope for the best and stick with it even if you’re tired, even when you want to walk away. Nothing worth it was only handed to anyone.
  • Why did you choose to attend UMass Lowell? I decided to be part of UML because I have family members who graduated from the university, and I was looking into a college that allowed me to be great to my full potential.
  • What does it mean to you to be a first-generation college student? To be a first-generation student is a source of empowerment that reminds me that the reason why my path is harder is because my calling is higher.
  • What inspires you to want to help first-generation students in the RHSA? The reason why I want to help first-generation students in the RHSA is because I believe that if I can help someone I should, I have been in their place and I know how difficult and scary it could be to believe you have taken the right choice and done the right thing for yourself. I want to be a leader who reminds students that maybe we took the road less traveled by and that has made all the difference.
