International Partnerships are tailored to the desired outcomes between UMass Lowell and another (or potentially more) institutions, defined through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).  They often include student and faculty exchanges in order to pursue joint research and scholarship endeavors.

Active International Partnerships

Pursuing a New Partnership

International Partnerships benefit both UMass Lowell and the partner institution, often in at least one of these ways:
  • Increase impact through working at multiple institutions.
  • Increase visibility of work across the globe.
  • Extend the capability of a research group either through access to technology, talent, or potential funding.  It is quite common for researchers to collaborate, as the additional talent may provide access to new techniques and approaches; researchers at other institutions may have unique assets for use in research or access to archives; and different countries have different funding mechanisms that often can only be accessed through collaboration.
  • Provide recruiting opportunities for future UMass Lowell students.
Proposals for partnerships must illustrate that they will pursue at least one of these benefits, with those providing multiple benefits being favored for support. Additionally, favored proposals will involve multiple faculty and staff from multiple departments and colleges. In addition to the benefits and participants, the proposal must outline the expected costs along with their justification.
To formally pursue a partnership, please email international_partnerships@uml.edu. Our standard review process is 7-10 business days.

Maintaining a Partnership

Partnerships that receive seed funding are required to submit a review report within one year of receiving support.

Mature partnerships are required to report on activities every three years for review.

The reports provide the opportunity to seek additional funds to maintain and/or grow relationships. To summarize activities, document on-going progress, potential expansion, and/or seek additional support, and complete the midterm review, please email international_partnerships@uml.edu.
