With projects involving energy, water and food safety as a priority, faculty and students will focus on examining health concerns, developing programs to decrease the impact of environmental contaminants, and assessing the efficacy of those programs. The research done at this center will not only challenge the critical thinking skills of students and faculty, but also make them aware of the cultural, social, economic, and regional factors that hinder positive change.
Given that these issues affect the entire country, research and subsequent implementation of programs can be applied in other regions once proved effective in the Southern Department of Haiti. In addition, an Honors Commonwealth seminar course has been created at UMass Lowell to facilitate advanced undergraduate science and engineering student participation in the program.
