Margaret Quinn, Sc.D, CIH, is Professor Emeritus and Program Director in the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production, University of Massachusetts Lowell. Her research and professional practice are dedicated to assessing environmental and work-related hazards and developing solutions that promote human and planetary health. She is nationally board certified in the comprehensive practice of industrial hygiene (CIH) by the Board of Global EHS credentialing. Her research focuses on environmental and occupational exposure assessment for studies of human health effects and public health intervention studies. She has directed numerous worksite, community-based, and laboratory-based occupational and environmental health studies, many using community-based participatory methods. Her early research involved characterization of aerosol exposures, development of new air monitoring methods and epidemiologic studies of occupational and environmental respiratory illness, endocrine disruption, and cancer risks. Her current work also includes evaluation of the social, economic and work organizational factors that both benefit and harm health. Her research has led to the identification of numerous hazards and ways to prevent them, including airborne fiber exposures, endocrine disrupters, needlestick injuries, work-related violence and safer cleaning and disinfecting practices for infection prevention. Quinn co-founded the Lowell Center for Sustainable Production (the Lowell Center) with the mission of designing workplaces, practices and products that are healthier, safer, and more ecologically sound. Within the Lowell Center, she directs the Sustainable Hospitals Program and the Safe Home Care Project, with missions to protect and promote the health, safety and well-being of the healthcare workforce, patients, and the environment. Quinn is a member of numerous national and international professional organizations and research committees that promote occupational and environmental health and safety. In 2018, she received a national award from the American Industrial Hygiene Association presented to an outstanding woman who has made a definitive, lasting achievement in the field of occupational and environmental hygiene through public and community service, social reform, technological innovation and advancements in the scientific approach to the recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards.Selected Awards and Honors
