Lowell Mill Girls’ Place in History Explored at Free Program
When and where: Wednesday, Jan. 29, 10 a.m. Campus Recreation Center, East Campus, 322 Aiken St., Lowell
What: The cultural contributions and experiences of young women who worked in Lowell’s textile factories in the mid-1800s will be examined at a free program for the public led by Bridget Marshall, a UMass Lowell associate professor of English who has conducted extensive research on the topic. The program is offered through the university’s Learning in Retirement Association (LIRA). Members of the public who would like more information should email lira@uml.edu.
Program Brings International Teachers to Local Classrooms
When and where: Thursday, Jan. 30, 4 p.m. United Teen Equality Center (UTEC), 35 Warren St., Lowell
What: More than 20 teachers from around the world who are participating in the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program will be will be welcomed to UMass Lowell at this event. Hosted by the university’s College of Education, the six-week cultural exchange program enables participants to gain field experience alongside teachers at middle and high schools in Andover, Chelmsford, Leominster, Lowell and Westford. The visiting teachers will also attend professional development programs and share best practices with fellow teachers, along with UMass Lowell faculty, staff and students. The program is coordinated through the International Research and Exchanges Board and funded by the U.S. Department of State. Note: This event is not open to the general public but media are invited to cover it.
Entrepreneurs, Venture Capitalists to Lead Forum on Funding
When and where: Tuesday, Feb. 4, 5:30 p.m. Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), UMass Lowell Innovation Hub, Fourth Floor, 110 Canal St., Lowell.
What: Medical device and biotechnology entrepreneurs can learn more about venture funding for startups from experts in the field. Speakers are scheduled to include Bill Yelle, a faculty member in UMass Lowell’s Manning School of Business and entrepreneur-in-residence at Partners Innovation Fund; Nancy Briefs, co-founder and CEO of Altrix Bio; Dr. Maria Berkman, director, Broadview Ventures; and Vinit Nijhawan, interim executive director at the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center. The event is presented by the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), a joint venture of UMass Lowell and UMass Medical School that helps medical-device and biotech startups bridge the gap between idea and market. Photo Exhibit Focuses in on the Azores
When and where: Artists’ reception, Tuesday, Feb. 18, 5:30 p.m. Exhibit runs through Friday, Feb. 28, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. University Crossing second floor, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell
What: The exhibit “Seeing the Archipelago” will feature photographs taken by UMass Lowell students who traveled to the Azores as part of a class on documentary imaging that also taught them about the history of immigrants who came from the islands to Lowell. The students – who hail from communities including Boston, Methuen, Lawrence, Tyngsborough and Wakefield, along with Afton, Va. – will also share what they learned through the study abroad experience at an artists’ reception. Both that event and the exhibit are free and open to the campus and community. Members of the public who would like more information should email art@uml.edu.
