Graduate Programs are Among Best in the Nation

LOWELL, Mass. – UMass Lowell’s graduate programs in business, criminology, education, engineering, nursing and sciences are among the best in the nation, according to new rankings released today by U.S. News & World Report.
The annual rankings for quality, considered among the most influential for higher education, are based on the excellence of the individual degree program as well as that of the institution’s faculty and research. More than 20,000 educators were surveyed regarding more than 2,000 programs nationwide.
“These latest rankings, as well as those for our online graduate programs, are well-earned recognition of the value of a UMass Lowell degree and the excellence of UMass Lowell’s academics, research and faculty,” said Chancellor Jacquie Moloney.
UMass Lowell’s Francis College of Engineering was ranked No. 3 overall for graduate programs offered by public universities in New England and several specific programs were also selected. The nuclear engineering degree was named No. 19 in the nation and three others made the top 100 in the U.S. in the categories of materials (No. 77), mechanical (98) and computer (99) engineering, and electrical engineering was No. 138.
UMass Lowell’s graduate programs in criminology were named No. 27 in the nation and No. 2 in New England. Master’s and doctoral degrees offered by the university were also ranked No. 1 among public institutions in Massachusetts.
The master’s degree offered by UMass Lowell’s Solomont School of Nursing climbed 10 spots in the ranking to No. 121 and the doctor of nursing practice made the list for the first time, coming in at No. 136.
Other programs selected for the rankings from more than 2,000 around the country include UMass Lowell’s part-time MBA (No. 118), as well as graduate degrees in physics (No. 124), chemistry (No. 145), education (No. 153) and biology (No. 218).
More than 4,300 graduate students are attending UMass Lowell this academic year.
UMass Lowell’s online graduate programs were also recognized in January as being among the best in the nation in a separate ranking by U.S. News & World Report. Online degrees in education, information technology and criminal justice were all ranked in the top 15 in the country and No. 1 among all public institutions in New England.
UMass Lowell, which is ranked among the top 80 public universities in the nation, also received high marks for online graduate programs in accounting, business, finance and engineering. UMass Lowell offers more than 50 online programs at the associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, as well as a range of undergraduate and graduate certificates.
