LOWELL -- UMass Lowell will begin welcoming its largest incoming class on Friday, with 2,600 freshmen and transfers.
The new class of students is also the university's most diverse and most academically qualified, UMass Lowell said in a press release. University enrollment will also surpass 17,500 for the first time.
The overall number of students has jumped by 50 percent since 2007.
Incoming freshmen had an average high school GPA of 3.58, and an average SAT score of 1179.
Move-in for students is from noon to 2 p.m. on Friday, with honors students moving into University Suites. Convocation, the official opening of the fall semester, will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in the Tsongas Center, with remarks from Chancellor Jacqueline Moloney and others.
"Welcome Back Night" will be held from 4 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 1, and will include events at Mill No. 5 and tours of the Lowell National Historical Park that will start at the UMass Lowell Inn & Conference Center.
