Admission
Undergraduate application to the Art & Design Department at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is a two-part process. Incoming applicants for graphic design, fine arts and photography need to:
- Submit an application to Undergraduate Admissions
- Submit a portfolio directly to the Art & Design Department via Slideroom
Academic records are reviewed by the Admissions Office. This is followed by the Art & Design Department’s review of portfolios. Applicants are notified by the Admissions Office regarding the final admission decision.
Application Deadlines
Incoming Freshmen
Incoming students’ portfolios are due November 1 (early action) and no later than February 1 (regular admission).
Transfer Students
Transfer students' portfolios are accepted on a rolling basis. Deadlines are January 10 (for spring admission) and August 20 (for fall admission).
Internal Applicants
UMass Lowell undergraduate students who want to change majors and be considered for the B.F.A. program are internal applicants. Portfolios are accepted on a rolling basis.
Applicants Who Do Not Have a Portfolio
The Art & Design Department’s goal is to train any student accepted at UMass Lowell. If you do not have a portfolio but are interested in becoming an art major, you can take Drawing I and Art Concepts I. These courses will prepare you for the portfolio application. Should you decide that your strength is in a different field, these courses will count toward general education (Arts and Humanities) for non-art majors.
