Safety on Campus

  • Emergency call boxes are located in all buildings and are also located throughout the University grounds. Emergency calls are received directly at the Communications Center.
  • The UML Campus has eight on-campus residential facilities. All residence halls are equipped with electronic security systems and uniformed security personnel during specific hours to promote a safe and secure environment on campus. Community members understand that while cameras are in operation, they may not be monitored at all times.
  • All day students are issued a University ID cards that allows them access into designated parking lots, the Recreations Center, dining halls and their designated residence hall if they live on campus.
  • In order to gain entry into a residence hall, all students must scan their ID to open the door, and/or sign in at the security desk with a resident of that building between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
  • We seek to provide well-lit parking lots and walkways across the campus. If you are aware of an area that is not well-lit, please contact the department.
  • The Safety Shuttle operates from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m., seven days a week and runs throughout the University on a continuous loop to provide a safe mode of transportation to and from any point on campus. For further information on the Safety Shuttle, please visit Student Services Escort, call (978) 934-2222 or 2100 or email Escort Services.

Going to school in Lowell – Is it safe?

  • The UML campus is a community of more than 15,000 faculty, students and staff, which lies within a city of approximately 100,000 residents. Occassionally crimes do cross into the University community and community members do partner with law enforcement to assist in the prevention of criminal activity.
  • The UML Police make every attempt to be proactive to prevent incidents or crimes on campus and also call upon community members to work with us in identifying areas that may need attention.
  • While the UML Police exist for the safety of the University community, we also encourage individuals to take appropriate measures to protect themselves and their possessions.

Protecting yourself and your property

  • DO NOT leave any valuables out in the open while your vehicle is parked. Be sure to secure valuables in a locked compartment and/or taken them with you when you park your vehicle. Also, be sure to park in designated student areas that are well lit and lock your vehicle door when exiting. DO NOT leave high priced items such as stereo equipment or after-market features out in the open for thieves to see. Cover them up!
  • DO NOT bring items of high value to campus if you can avoid it. If you must bring an expensive item, be sure to secure it and document serial numbers for record keeping.
  • DO take advantage of the residence hall’s security measure. For instance, scan your University ID when asked to do so and be sure that your guests are checked in properly when visiting a residence hall. DO NOT open the door for strangers, and DO NOT prop open doors. Be sure to lock your room when you are not in it, and be sure that your roommate does the same.
  • DO familiarize yourself with the University’s escort service to travel at night, as well as the emergency call boxes that are located on campus. If possible, walk with a friend or fellow students when walking from place to place on campus to reduce your chances of becoming a target. Walk in areas that are well-lit if possible and stay on sidewalks.
  • DO make yourself aware of your surroundings. Know where to go or where the nearest emergency call box is in case you feel frightened, or if you need to report a suspicious person.
  • DO NOT talk on a cell phone while walking on campus, especially at night or while walking by your self. Talking on a phone causes you to be distracted and not pay attention to your surrounds. Walk with purpose and pay attention to your surroundings at all times.
  • DO participate in self defense and crime prevention initiatives offered by the University community.
