Her research interest is in the area of teaching science through inquiry. Particularly in the effect of using this pedagogical skill as opposed to traditional didactic teaching of scientific concepts in the raising of achievement and attainment of low ability middle school learners.

Biosketch
Sumudu Lewis began her teaching career the United Kingdom where she taught integrated science (grades 6 - 10) and chemistry (grades 11-12) for two years. She worked in three different schools in England, starting as a science teacher, then as Head of Science, and finally as Assistant Principal and STEM coordinator. During her ten years as a teacher in the UK, Sumudu was actively involved in various local and national strategies aimed at raising the profile of science to encourage more youngsters to pursue a career in science. She also served as a member of the School and College Committee for the Royal Society of Chemistry for three years.
