Program Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes for the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering, Environmental Studies

Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering, Environmental Studies Program Objectives and Student Learning Outcomes

Graduate Program Objectives

  1. Graduate programs will support and enhance the research mission of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the James B. Francis College of Engineering, and the University of Massachusetts.
  2. Graduate programs will enhance student competencies in core civil and environmental engineering related subject areas, building upon the foundation formed by the general baccalaureate studies.  This expansion of competencies will enable students to pursue successful careers in civil and environmental engineering and related fields, as well as to engage in lifelong learning and continued professional development.
  3. Graduate programs will address the needs of industry, government agencies and laboratories, and academic institutions for continuous workforce development.

Graduate Student Learning Outcomes

A student graduating from the graduate programs in Civil Engineering (options in Environmental, Geotechnical, Structural, Transportation and Geoenvironmental) and Environmental Studies (concentration in Environmental Engineering Sciences) should possess, at a level appropriate for a graduate student:
  1. an ability to apply advanced engineering principles to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, equitable, environmental, and economic factors.
  2. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
  3. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  4. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
