
Fast Track to Teaching
The Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science/Master of Education Fast Track Program to Teaching is designed for high achieving UMass Lowell undergraduates who seek to pursue a career in teaching.
The program leads to a master of education degree in curriculum and instruction, including initial Massachusetts teacher licensure. The program may be completed in one or two years. Elementary and Early Childhood Education licensure courses are offered during the day at either 9 a.m. or 1 p.m. Middle/High School licensure courses are offered at 4 p.m.

Advantages of the combined degree program include:
- two degrees plus teacher licensure may be achieved in five years.
- six graduate credits may be taken in the senior year, provided the student has been accepted to the program and all other undergraduate requirements have been fulfilled.

Exploring Teaching (02.401) is a course for third and fourth year undergraduates who are considering teaching as a career. Focusing on students, teachers, classrooms and schools, this course provides an overview of the historical, philosophical, legal and societal influences that shape education today. The course will employ group discussions, case studies, technology presentations, guest speakers, videos and reflection as the main vehicle for helping students integrate theory with practice. The course is offered in the spring semester.

UML undergraduate students may apply to the program during the fall semester of their senior year. Successful applicants must have an undergraduate major in an arts (social sciences, humanities, fine arts) or science academic content area and a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Satisfactory scores on the Graduate Record Exam are also required.
