Freshman ApplicantsBefore you make a decision about where to go to college, there are some preliminary steps we think you should take: talk to us and visit campus.

We also hope you will visit campus during your college search process. UMass Lowell has a beautiful and busy campus with first-rate facilities for teaching, research, living and playing. The best way to understand that is to take a tour and see the campus for yourself.
Before you apply on paper or online, be sure to read all instructions.
What's in a Completed Application Package? Your application package will include:
- A completed Application for Undergraduate Admission.
- The University is upgrading the Student Administration system. Due to the upgrade, the online web application will be unavailable during the following timeframe:

If you are unable to complete the application at this time, an alternative online application will be available during the system downtime.
- Your application fee.
- Your score from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT). The CEEB (College Entrance Examination Board) code number for UMass Lowell is 3911. (UMass Lowell, along with the other UMass campuses and Massachusetts state colleges, is reviewing the math and reading sections only of the SAT.)
- High school transcript. Be sure the transcript includes your first marking period grades and your date of birth. Applicants should ask their guidance counselors to forward the transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions, 883 Broadway, Suite 110, Lowell, MA 01854-5104.
- A personal essay. Prepare a one-to-two page essay (from 250-500 words) answering one of the following questions:
- What do you do in your spare time?
- In your opinion, what is the greatest challenge your generation will face? What ideas do you have for dealing with this issue?
- If you had to formulate the perfect admissions essay question, what would it be and how would you answer it?
- Topic of choice
*Submission of this essay can be mailed to our office (address is above) or e-mailed to: admissions@uml.edu. Please remember to write your full name on the top of the essay.
- One letter of recommendation. You should ask someone who is familiar with your abilities and experience (such as a teacher, guidance counselor, coach, employer, etc.) to provide this letter. The letter of recommendation should be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions along with your application.
- A TOEFL/ELPT test score, if English is not your first language or if your method of instruction is not in English.
High School Course Requirements
In order to fulfill minimum requirements, you should have completed the following coursework at the college preparatory level or higher during high school:
Four years of English Two years of social studies (including one year of U.S. history) Three years of mathematics Two years of foreign language (in a single language) Three years of science (two with a lab) Two years of electives
