FairHoliday Fair Showcases Artwork, Crafts Created by Women

When: Thursday, Dec. 3, 2 to 7 p.m.

What: Women who are UMass Lowell graduates, faculty, staff and friends of the university will showcase their products for sale during the Women’s Works Holiday Art and Craft Fair. Filled with jewelry, knitted items, foods, paintings and other handmade items, the event – this year being held at University Crossing – helps kick off the holiday shopping season. Musical performances, an art show and a silent auction will add to shoppers’ experience. Event proceeds will benefit UMass Lowell’s Center for Women and Work, which researches the relationship between gender and work and seeks remedies for gender inequalities in the workplace. Public parking is available at a metered lot across the street from the venue and along Fr. Morissette Boulevard.

DubusAward-Winning Author Andre Dubus III to Lead Memoir-Writing Forum

When: Thursday, Dec. 3, 5 to 6:30 p.m.

What: Award-winning author Andre Dubus III, a professor in UMass Lowell’s English Department, will lead “Memory Work: Writing, Remembering and Making Sense of Biography and Memoir,” a free roundtable discussion that is open to the public. Dubus – who has earned praise for both his fiction and non-fiction works – is the writer of “Townie: A Memoir,” which chronicles his upbringing in Haverhill, his young adult life and tumultuous relationship with his father, author Andre Dubus II. Joining him will be UMass Lowell faculty panelists History Prof. Shehong Chen, Philosophy Prof. John Kaag, Political Science Prof. John Wooding, Education Prof. James Nehring and Paul Marion, UMass Lowell’s executive director of community relations, a published poet who has also written about Lowell history. Free parking is available in the municipal garage next to the venue.

StringLowell Youth Orchestra Concert Evokes a Winter Wonderland

When: Thursday, Dec. 3, 7 p.m.

What: High-school students from throughout the Merrimack Valley who are members of the UMass Lowell String Project’s Lowell Youth Orchestra will present their free Winter Showcase concert for the campus and the public. The group will play holiday-inspired classical works by Bach and Tchaikovsky conducted by faculty member John-Morgan Bush, executive director of the String Project, a program that provides public schoolchildren with music lessons and performance experience through a variety of ensembles. After the concert there will be an all-ages reception where audience members can make music and decorate sugar cookies. Admission to the reception is $75 per person, with children under age 18 admitted for free. Proceeds from the event will benefit the String Project’s Instrument Fund, which provides instruments to students in the program. TripathyStem Cell Expert Presents Work at Research Summit

When: Friday, Dec. 4, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What: Prof. Matthew Nugent, chairman of UMass Lowell’s Biological Sciences Department, will discuss how understanding stem cells can help treat diseases during the Tripathy Memorial Symposium. The annual event brings together leading researchers in biomedicine, nanotechnology and plastics engineering to talk about their latest findings and the future of these fields. Other presentations during this year’s event will explore advances in microscopy and plastics used to make sensors, semiconductors, insulators and medical devices. The event honors the life and work of Sukant Tripathy, a chemical engineering professor, founder and former director of UMass Lowell’s Center for Advanced Materials, and a past provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs.

PawsPooches, a Princess and Santa to Appear at River Hawk Hockey Game

When: Sunday, Dec. 6, 1 p.m.

What: There will be plenty of holiday fun for all ages at UMass Lowell’s annual “Pucks and Paws” event. Owners may bring their dogs to the River Hawk hockey game as the Division I men’s team – which leads the Hockey East pack – takes on the University of Connecticut Huskies. All dogs in attendance will need a special ticket and record of current vaccination. A princess will entertain children before and during the game, as will Santa Claus, who will make an appearance. After the game, fans may share the ice with River Hawk players during the team’s annual holiday skate event. Pet owners who wish to bring their dogs are asked to contact Christine_Maurais@uml.edu or call 978-934-2181.
