WHAT: The editor of one of the country’s most prestigious medical journals will offer a prognosis for the U.S. health-care system during the first of UMass Lowell’s 2015 Lunchtime Lectures.

Dr. Howard Bauchner, editor-in-chief of the Journal of the American Medical Association, will explore emerging policy issues in the second year of the Affordable Care Act – called “Obamacare” by some – which mandates health insurance for all Americans. The program is free and open to the public.

Bauchner’s role as the journal’s top editor includes oversight of resource guides for physicians and 10 other leading medical publications on a variety of topics. A pediatrician, Bauchner previously served as the editor of the Archives of Disease in Childhood, which focuses on health and disease in young people from birth through adolescence. He is a former professor of pediatrics and community health.

An honorary fellow of the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health in London, Bauchner is also a member of the Society for Pediatric Research and the American Pediatric Society, which are partner professional groups for physicians in the U.S. and Canada.

Each fall, the Lunchtime Lecture Series brings engaging speakers to campus for discussions on current events and community issues. The programs are presented by UMass Lowell and the Moses Greeley Parker Lectures with support from campus and community partners.
