WhaT:  Piper Kerman, author of “Orange is the New Black” and advocate for prison reform, will come to UMass Lowell’s new University Crossing student center to speak to the campus and the public at a free event.

Kerman’s talk – the second in a new series of author events at UMass Lowell – will be followed by a book-signing in the River Hawk Shop, the university’s new flagship bookstore.

“Orange is the New Black” is Kerman’s powerful memoir of her year in a women’s prison. The New York Times bestseller inspired the hit Netflix series, which has captured three Emmys and nine nominations, was recognized as the AFI’s “TV Program of the Year” and earned three Critics Choice Television Awards.

University Crossing is a hub for student activities and services, as well as for programs and amenities including the River Hawk Shop and Crossroads Cafe, both of which are open to the public. The student center is one of 10 new buildings opened by UMass Lowell since 2009.

Where:  University Crossing, Moloney Hall, 220 Pawtucket St., Lowell. Please contact UMass Lowell media relations for credentials and parking information.
