What: UMass Lowell Prof. Stephen McCarthy, an innovator in medical-device development and a pioneer in plastics engineering, will present the annual University Professor lecture.

McCarthy, who lives in Tyngsborough and has taught in the university’s Francis College of Engineering since 1984, has earned worldwide respect from leaders in fields including biodegradable plastics and medical-device development. He holds several patents and has secured nearly $9 million in research grants and contracts and nearly $33 million in intellectual property donations to UMass Lowell.

The co-director of the Massachusetts Medical Device Development Center (M2D2), McCarthy will discuss his dynamic work in plastics and how centers like M2D2 foster collaboration between industry and faculty researchers that supports job growth and other economic development. He will also highlight success stores of entrepreneurs who have benefitted from the services offered by M2D2, including the expertise of plastics engineering and business faculty at UMass Lowell, as well as those in medicine at UMass Worcester and an advisory board of industry experts. M2D2, a joint venture of UMass Lowell and UMass Worcester, also houses an incubator for startup companies on the UMass Lowell campus.

UMass Lowell named McCarthy its University Professor for the 2012-2013 academic year in honor of his exemplary teaching, nationally significant research and exceptional service to the university. Each recipient of the honor presents a University Professor Lecture that shares with the public the vitality of his or her research.

McCarthy also serves UMass Lowell as director of the university’s Biodegradable Polymer Research Center and co-director of the Center for Irish Partnerships.
