Do you ever hear the words, “I’m bored” from your children during summer vacation? If so, check out the summer camps that UMass Lowell has to offer.
Continuing its long tradition of opening the campus to area youngsters, the University is hosting four different summer programs: Athletic camp; Mary Jo Leahey Summer Band Camp; DesignCamp; and the Tsongas Industrial History Center camp. Since the camps first started, the University has played summer host to nearly 25,000 young students.
Budding athletes can take their pick from a variety of programs offered by the Athletics Department. They can choose from weeklong camps in basketball, baseball, softball, ice hockey, field hockey, soccer and volleyball. These programs, offered for athletes of all levels, run from June through early August and host more than 1,000 campers each summer.
Another great program for youngsters is the Mary Jo Leahey Summer Band Camp, a one-week intensive program for musically talented students. Now entering its 12th year, it includes master class clinics by professional musicians, various performances of camp ensembles, and a grand finale concert. The children also take part in traditional summer camp activities such as cookouts, volleyball games and swimming. This year the program will be held the week of July 13.
For children who want to pass their time building, inventing and creating, DesignCamp is where it’s at. Led by Doug Prime and his talented team, DesignCamp is a series of hands-on science and engineering workshops for students in grades 5 though 11. The weekly program offers a challenging and creative learning experience developed and taught by an outstanding team of experienced science and technology teachers. Sample projects include learning to design and build liquid-propelled rockets and hot air balloons, designing video games and learning how forensic scientists solve crimes. DesignCamp runs weekly from July 7 through Aug. 1.
Rounding out the camp program schedule is the Tsongas Industrial History Center’s summer camp. This year, the program celebrates its 15th year. During the sessions, campers can visit four national parks in Massachusetts, build a canal system as they explore the roots of the American Industrial Revolution, and take a boat trip on the Merrimack River. They can also take part in a mock assembly line, try their skills at hand weaving, and participate in costume role play. Programs at the Tsongas Center run weekly from July 7 through Aug. 1.
