How to Start a New Sport Club

  1. Gather interest: You need at least 15 full-time undergraduate students who are interested and willing to join before you can attempt to start a new club. Many students will garner interest for their club by promoting a general interest meeting on campus at the beginning of the semester.
  2. Contact Club Sport Office: Contact Keith Jasie, Phone: 978-934-5669 or email: Keith_Jasie@uml.edu in the Club Sport Office to set up an initial meeting.
  3. Create a club constitution: You need to put together a club proposal which includes a club constitution, by-laws, determination of club requirements, list of club officers and members with appropriate paperwork, and a potential selection of an advisor and/or coach.
    1. The Club Sports Office can provide you with specific forms that will assist you in this process.
  4. Club approval process: Based on interest, need and the clubs proposal, Campus Recreation will determine if the club can be approved. A club's purpose and activity must be consistent with the definition and purpose of the Sport Club Program and meet its criteria and be approved. Criteria can include sufficient interest in the club from undergraduate students; are suitable facilities available for practice, competition, and recreation; are funds available to meet financial needs of club; or is there already a program or club offered elsewhere on campus that meets the same student needs/interests that the club hopes to meet.
  5. If sport club is approved: Once a club is approved they will be considered a probationary club for the first year. During this year the club must supply its own budget. After the first year the club is expected meet 2/3rds of the funding that Campus Recreation provides. Budgets are determined for each club through an annual budget approval process at Campus Recreation. Clubs can raise additional funds through discretionary funding applications. Note: There must be at least 10 undergraduate students active and participating in each club at all times to remain an active club. Clubs must also abide by all Club Sport policies found in the Club Sports Manual, or risk being placed on probation or potential loss of recognition as a club sport at UMass Lowell.

Inclusion in Club Sports

UMass Lowell Athletics logo of a River Hawk head with the words UMass Lowell over it and Club Sports beneath it.

The Club Sport Program prides itself on it's efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the UMass Lowell community.

Clubs are open to full-time students, full-time Faculty/Staff and full-time graduate students regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin, sexual orientation or disabilities. Divisions of competition for UMass Lowell Campus Recreation are men's, women's and open categories. When a gender designation is requested/required for an activity, students may select and participate in the group they identify as/with. However, some competitive clubs may have their own specific eligibility guidelines set by their respective sports' governing body, which have specific standards for collegiate competition. For any additional questions or information, please contact Keith Jasie by email: Keith_Jasie@uml.edu.

Inclusive Campus Recreation Training (ICR)

As a main priority of Campus Recreation, Club Sports is proud to offer multiple diversity and inclusion based training to our club leaders and coaches throughout the year.

You Can Play

We wanted to show our support for the LGBTQ community at UMass Lowell so we decided to create a "You Can Play" YouTube video emphasizing that any student can play Club Sports no matter how you identify.
