Degrees in Occupational & Environmental Hygiene
If you’re concerned with both epidemiology and worker health and safety stemming from environmental factors, you’ll be a great fit for this multi-disciplinary degree program.
Learn to prevent illness and injury in the workplace. Recognizing, evaluating, controlling and preventing chemical, physical, biological and psychosocial hazards in the work environment are the focus of this field of study. With your master’s or doctoral degree in OEH, you’ll have the tools to not only keep people healthy, but also productive at work. You’ll learn to diagnose exposure problems, develop sampling strategies, and collect and measure samples to diagnose environmental risk factors that threaten worker health and safety. You’ll also study how to design and implement more sustainable production systems.
WE’s Master of Science in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is accredited by the Applied Science Accreditation Commission and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). To earn your MS in this specialization, you’ll take the 15 WE Core course credits, plus 18 credits of OEH concentration courses, and 3 credits of elective courses.
To earn your ScD in Occupational & Environmental Hygiene, you’ll also take two or more seminars and then focus on dissertation research. Under the tutelage of Drs. Dhimiter Bello, Michael Ellenbecker, Margaret Quinn, or Susan Woskie, you’ll have the option to complete your Doctoral Dissertation in one of the following areas of research:
- Exposure assessment
- Exposure hazards in nanotechnology
- Indoor Air & healthy buildings
- Sampling & analytical methods for airborne contaminants
- Aerosol science
- Noise control
- Toxic use reduction or
- Integration of sustainable production and occupational hygiene
Prerequisites: One semester of math, one semester of biology, one semester of physics, one semester of chemistry, and one semester of organic chemistry with a grade of C or better are required. Courses must be taken during your undergraduate study in order to satisfy the Occupational and Environmental Hygiene requirements.
