Service-Learning (S-L) is defined as: “A credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.” (Bringle & Hatcher, 1995)
Adding a service-learning component to any course can help strengthen lessons learned, encourage community engagement as a learning process, and prepare students for post-college careers with applicable skills.
Service-learning is an integral part of the engagement mission of UMass Lowell. Preparing our students to be “Work Ready, Life Ready, World Ready,” means reaching beyond the classroom to facilitate experiences that will encourage/help students to grow both professionally and personally.
As Service-Learning Coordinators, we are here to support faculty in incorporating service-learning in their classroom, and to help community partners connect with faculty whom they can work together with.
Service-Learning Course Attribute
We are excited to announce that as of fall 2013 and for upcoming semesters, a Service-Learning Attribute can be applied to a courses. With the Service-Learning Attribute, faculty will be able to showcase their service-learning courses, and students can now have the chance to make more informed choices on classes by being able to view the attribute on iSiS. Plus, once completing a service-learning course, it will be identified on a student's transcripts.
To help faculty members determine if their courses meet the service-learning courses criteria, please check the Attached Policies below. The Attribute Policies provide detailed information on criteria and the process for having your course approved. The form should be filled out by faculty then submitted to the service-learning coordinators at SL_info@uml.edu. Please contact us for additional information.
