Service-Learning (SL) is defined as: “A credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs and reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, and an enhanced sense of civic responsibility.” - Bringle & Hatcher, 1995
As Service-Learning Coordinators, we are here to support faculty in incorporating service-learning in their classroom, and to help community partners connect with faculty.
Are you a community member looking to connect with the university or a faculty member looking to share your opportunities with the community? If so, go to our Community Connections Platform.
Service-Learning Course Attribute
Applying to have the SL Attribute to your course will add you to the list of SL courses in our database, provide your students with a note of completing the SL course on their transcript, and it will allow students to search for SL courses.
The Attribute Policies provide detailed information on criteria and the process for having your course approved. The form should be filled out by faculty then submitted to the service-learning coordinators at SL_info@uml.edu.
Forms with be reviewed by the UPC (Undergraduate Policy Committee) or GPAC (Graduate Program Policy & Affairs Committee) twice a year, every November and every April. In order to meet the UPC and GPAC needs, deadlines for submission are:
Oct. 15 by 11:59 p.m. - This is the last submission date for FALL courses, you may also submit SPRING courses at this time if you'd like the course listed as a SL course when students are registering for courses.
March 15 by 11:59 p.m. - This is the last submission date for SPRING courses, you may also submit FALL courses at this time if you'd like the course listed as a SL course when students are registering for courses.
If your course was previously approved for a Service-Learning Course Attribute, you may skip the above form and simply renew your course by filling out the renewal form.
