Welcome to the University of Massachusetts Lowell

Welcome to the website of the Chancellor's Office. I enjoy having an active dialogue with members of the campus community, our extended network of friends and prospective students. Please share your comments and pose questions if you have them. On this site you can learn about the Chancellor's Office, my background, campus news and ways that you can support our efforts.

UMass Lowell is one of five campuses of the University of Massachusetts system. Our roots in Lowell stretch back more than 100 years. Our buildings line the banks of the Merrimack River as it swings through one of the most historic cities in America, a place where our nation's Industrial Revolution began. But our history is just a springboard to the future. Students and scholars here are immersed in the most important issues facing today's society.

This city and region and our campus have always been identified with invention and innovation. The tradition continues today in the classrooms and laboratories of UMass Lowell. We are on the leading edge of the knowledge economy. Massachusetts and our country must move forward on the strength of intellect and imagination. Author Thomas L. Friedman calls brainpower the new oil in the 21st century global economy. That is the kind of energy policy that we understand at UMass Lowell.

During my time as chancellor, I celebrated the 30th anniversary of my graduating class at Lowell, and I proudly attended the reunion with my fellow alumni, knowing that each of us owed much to what we gained from our teachers and classmates here. It has been an honor for me to return as chancellor. I have often said that my education here set the stage for everything I have achieved in life to date. I know UMass Lowell can do the same for you, whether you are hoping to enter as an undergraduate, seeking to enroll in a graduate program, or looking for courses to strengthen your professional development.

One of the advantages of a university is that we offer programs across the spectrum of learning, from nanotechnology to nursing, from engineering to English literature, from management to music, from computer science to criminal justice. Our campus life offers a rich menu of events, student clubs, sports, service programs and more. Our location is an asset. Lowell is in the middle of New England, with mountains, seashore, Boston and Providence, and even New York City and Montreal within easy reach. On our doorstep is Lowell itself, the cultural hub of the Merrimack Valley, a place with a full schedule of concerts, festivals and professional sports — not to mention a world of restaurants in its beautifully preserved downtown.
